School over the Summer?

Yuck! What kid wants to do schoolwork over the summer?  Mine sure don't; however, to make sure they are where they need to be for next year, this momma has made an executive decision to have school over the summer.  We are taking breaks for things like camps, mission trips, and Vacation Bible School; but, even with those breaks, we will be getting in twelve weeks of school. What are we going to be doing?

First of all, we are keeping up math skills.  My daughter is working through the Math Mammoth Make it Real math supplements.  They are uber user-friendly and inexpensive!  Plus, she loves the way the problems are written.  Right now, she is in the MIR Geometry.  My son is doing a combination of MIR math supplements and No-Nonsense Algebra. He doesn't exactly 'love it' right now, because we are reviewing concepts that have somehow flown out of his brain over the past few months.  I think it will be really helpful for him, though, since he is trying to get his ACT math score up.

Second, we are working on writing skills with IEW.  I love the video presentations and the formulated work.  It is so easy to follow!

Third, we are brushing up on Geography of the world and United States / Capitals with Memoria Press materials.  This means there is some type of map work everyday.  My daughter loves this because she likes to color maps. My son is more into the neat information about the countries we are studying.

Finally, we are exploring world literature.  My daughter is going to be reading A Girl Named Disaster and completing the online curriculum for this book through Moving Beyond the Page.  My son is going to be reading Things Fall Apart and completing the study guide from Progeny Press or Hewitt Homeschooling (I haven't decided which yet). I am leaning toward Progeny Press because it is in an interactive .pdf.  He hates to write, but loves to type on the computer, so I think this will be right up his alley.

Overall, we are going to be using four days per week for school work and the rest of the days for fun summer type stuff. We'll see how it goes.  Who knows, this may become a habit for us!

What are your school or out of school plans for the summer? Leave a comment below about your plans.  It just may bless someone else!  Have a great summer!

P.S. - Look for reviews over many of the curriculum items we are using. They all will be coming up in the next couple of months!
