Summer Science Classes

Dear Parents and Students,
In order to help out with students who desire some extra high school science credits and students who want to take a science class next school year that conflicts with another class they want to take, I am offering summer school classes this year.
These classes are not affiliated with any homeschool tutorial or umbrella school. This is an independent endeavor.
Here are the ‘nitty gritty’ details:
1.     Classes will meet 8 times for 4 hours each meeting. Yes, we will take breaks as needed. I promise. This will mean that I will work with students in person for 32 hours.
2.    Between class sessions, I will be available via phone, e-mail, or Skype to answer questions or help with coursework, if needed.
3.    Class sessions will consist of lecture / discussion, reviewing homework and answering questions, and lab work.
4.    Students will complete an entire course (1 full credit) over the course of the summer. This will be challenging, but is very doable. Students will generally need to devote 10 or more hours per week to course work, studying, and tests.
5.    Not all classes will be using Apologia texts (see list at the end of this)
6.    Since these classes are during the summer, I will try to schedule our 8 sessions with sensitivity to vacations, camps, etc… However, there may be times when I can’t accommodate everyone. If that happens, I’ll deal with the individual situation to make sure the student is up to speed with the class.
7.    Cost: $320 for each class plus lab equipment fee (this depends on the class); Tuition is payable either all at once by the first class session or in two installments – one at the first class session and one at the fifth class session. Supply fees are due in advance. I will give exact dates as soon as they are set.
8.    Classes: **If it says ‘student provided’ for the text – that means you need to secure a textbook.
a.    Chemistry 1 - $50 lab fee (Apologia text – student provided)
b.    Chemistry 2 - $75 lab fee (will use some of the Apologia text, but not much. Students do not have to purchase – I will give notes for what they need)
c.    Biology 1 - $50 lab fee (Apologia text – student provided)
9.    To reserve your spot in a class, I need a $50 deposit plus supply fee (the deposit will be subtracted from your tuition) by May 24.

I am not doing this to in any way take away from the classes I teach during the school year at CHET. I am doing this to help students out. I have many students who are wanting to go into a science based career. By taking more science classes in high school, this pathway can be facilitated and made much easier in college. Also, I only offer Biology 2 every other year at CHET. I am offering it this coming year; however, both Biology 1 and Chemistry 1 are prerequisites for the class. If a student wants to take that this year, but doesn’t have the prerequisites, summer school would be a great option.

Finally, CLEP testing is a great way for students to get some college credit hours for much less expense. If a student completes Biology 1 and 2, Chemistry 1 and 2, and the Special Topics in Biology class, that student (with studying) could easily pass the CLEP tests for Biology 1 and Chemistry 1 for college. I have seen it done.

If you have already registered your student, please contact me ASAP about getting your deposit and supply fee to me.  I have to get supplies purchased soon.
